The word “endodontic” comes from two Greek words meaning “inside” and “tooth.” Endodontics is the science of treating problems that involve the tissue inside the tooth. This internal tissue, blood vessels and connective tissue is called the “pulp.” When this tissue or the tissue surrounding the tooth root is diseased or damaged due to trauma, endodontic treatment can save the tooth.
Endodontist are experts at diagnosing and relieving oral and facial pain. They are dental specialists who have completed dental school and have studied for an additional two years in an accredited advanced specialty education program in endodontics. Because they are specialists, they limit their practice to endodontics. They perform routine as well as difficult and very complex endodontic procedures, including endodontic surgery and the treatment of traumatic dental injuries.
Symptoms that might indicate the need for root canal therapy include:
1. Constant pain including pain that can keep you awake at night.
2. Sensitivity to hot and cold.
3. A darkening of the color of only one tooth.
4. The appearance of a pimple or swelling in the gum.
